Castlereagh Street North is known today as Lawson Street. It was renamed in honour of the early settlers and a tribute to the pioneers of the district. Hogan is said to have run a business from the site for some years before leaving the district to prospect for gold. The site then became a butcher’s shop run by Mr. Thomas Andrews, who soon discovered that a Public House would more profitable than butchering. He was the first licensee of the Australian Arms in 1874.
Three years later, Mr. Thomas Andrews died from liver congestion leaving his young wife Harriet and their seven children to keep the pub running. Harriet owned the Australian Arms Hotel until 1901 when she passed.
The Australian Arms changed hands many times over the next 114 years (see list of publicans below)
In 1939 the Licensing Court ordered that the building be demolished on the grounds that it was not fit for service.
It then consisted of one bar, three parlours, seven bedrooms and separate bathrooms for ladies and gents. There was no hot water throughout the building and no shower cubicles. In 1940 the hotel was completely rebuilt.
Today The Australian Arms Hotel is proudly owned by Peter and Matthew McCoy. In keeping with the history of the rural settlement of Penrith, the Aussie Arms boasts a 50 seat dining room and 100 seat outdoor beer garden serving modern Australian cuisine and tradition pub food.
The beer garden known as The Woolshed offers a fantastic Function facility seating up to 120 or for a more intimate dining experiences and cocktail parties we have a private lounge upstairs for up to 30 people.
